planner sizes - how many are there?

to be honest: I have no idea how many planner sizes are out there!

There are the DIN-sizes, like A6 or A5, then company sizes like Filofax Personal or Pocket and then there are so many sizes out there, especially in bound books, that nobody can really tell.

I do not and cannot list every size here, I try to capture as many as possible but I guess the list will never be quite finished.

DIN sizes:

A7		74 x 105 mm	2.9 x 4.1 inches
A6		105 x 148 mm	4.1 x 5.8 inches
B6		125 x 176 mm	4.9 x 6.9 inches
B6 Japan		128 x 182 mm	5.0 x 7.2 inches
A5		148 x 210 mm	5.8 x 8.3 inches
A4		210 x 297 mm	8.3 x 11.7 inches
B5		176 x 205 mm	6.9 x 8.0 inches

There are a lot more DIN-sizes, in either A, B, C and so one, I have listed above the most common sizes for planners.

Not to forget the Japanese DIN-sizes which are a bit different from the European DIN-sizes, the most common to be used is the B6 Japan size.

USA sizes:

Junior		127 x 203 mm	5.0 x 8.0 inches
Half Letter		140 x 216 mm	5.5 x 8.5 inches
Letter		216 x 254 mm	8.5 x 11.0 inches
Legal		216 x 356 mm	8.5 x 14.0 inches

and here we come already at the first confusing point: Levenger, which is a US company for discbound planners offer inserts in sizes of Junior and Letter. Their Junior size is 5.5x8.5 inches, so rather Half Letter. Their Letter size is 8.5x11 inches, this matches the list above.

Filofax sizes:

Pocket	rings	81 x 120 mm	3.2 x 4.7 inches
Personal	rings	95 x 171 mm	3.75 x 6.75 inches
A5	rings	148 x 210 mm	5.8 x 8.3 inches
A4	rings	210 x 297 mm	8.3 x 11.7 inches

these are the paper sizes, the cover sizes vary due to their material or ring size

Franklin Covey Planner sizes:

Pocket	rings	89 x 152 mm	3.5 x 6 inches
Compact	rings	108 x 171 mm	4.25 x 6.75 inches
Classic	rings	140 x 216 mm	5.5 x 8.5 inches
Monarch	rings	216 x 254 mm	8.5 x 11 inches

Franklin Covey goes after the normal US sizes, Classic is Half Letter and Monarch is Letter size. Just Pocket and Compact are special sizes.

Leuchtturm sizes:

Mini A7	bound book	70 x 110 mm	2.75 x 4.33 inches
Pocket A6	bound book	90 x 150 mm	3.5 x 5.9 inches
Paperback B6+	bound book	125 x 190 mm	4.9 x 7.5 inches
Medium A5	bound book	145 x 210 mm	5.7 x 8.3 inches
Composition B5	bound book	178 x 254 mm	7 x 10 inches
Master A4+	bound book	225 x 315 mm	8.8 x 12,4 inches

Leuchtturm sizes are quite confusing because they mention the DIN-sizes in their descriptions, but they are not the real DIN-sizes. A6 for example is 105x148 mm, but their Pocket A6 is much slimmer but higher, 90x150mm. And these are the outside sizes, each sheet of paper is another 2-3mm smaller.

Moleskine sizes:

XS	bound book	65 x 105 mm	2.5 x 4.1 inches
Pocket	bound book	90 x 140 mm	3,5 x 5,5 inches
Medium	bound book	115 x 175 mm	4,5 x 6.8 inches
Large	bound book	130 x 210 mm	5.1 x 8.3 inches
XL	bound book	190 x 250 mm	7.5 x 9.8 inches
A4	bound book	210 x 297 mm	8.3 x 11.7 inches

Moleskine as well makes their own sizes, they are similar to Leuchtturm but differently, and not in DIN-sizes. These are again outside sizes, the paper sizes are smaller.

Paperblanks:

Mini	bound book	95 x 140 mm	3.75 x 5.5 inches
Midi	bound book	130 x 180 mm	5 x 7 inches
Slim	bound book	95 x 180 mm	3.75 x 7 inches
Ultra	bound book	180 x 230 mm	7 x 9 inches
Grande	bound book	210 x 300 mm	8.3 x 11.75 inches

these are again outside cover sizes, not paper sizes.

Hobonichi sizes:

A6	bound book	105 x 148 mm	4.1 x 5.8 inches
A5	bound book	148 x 210 mm	5.8 x 8.3 inches
Weeks	bound book	94 x 188 mm	3.7 x 7.4 inches
Weekly Calendar	bound book	95 x 140 mm	3.7 x 5.5 inches
Hobo Note Semi B5	bound book	179 x 252 mm	7 x 9.9 inches

the paper sizes are identical to the cover sizes, as the Hobonichi covers are the same size with no overhang. Exception would be the Weeks Calender, here the paper size is a bit smaller than the cover

Jibun Techo sizes:

B6 mini	bound book	120 x 190 mm	4.7 x 7.5 inches
B6 mini notebook	bound book	108 x 182 mm	4.25 x 7.2 inches
A5 slim	bound book	138 x 217 mm	5.4 x 8.5 inches
A5 slim notebook	bound book	125 x 210 mm	4.9 x 8.3 inches

Franklin Planner Japan:

A6	bound book	105 x 148 mm	4.1 x 5.8 inches
A5	bound book	148 x 210 mm	5.8 x 8.3 inches
B6 Japan	bound book	128 x 182 mm	5.0 x 7.2 inches
weekly slim	bound book	97 x 162 mm	3.8 x 6.3 inches

These are paper sizes with the exception of weekly slim, this is the cover size.

And then there are special sizes which are now very often used in ring covers

They are mostly wider than any DIN-sizes or a bit higher, but depending on the cover layout these special sizes fit very well into a "standard cover".

For example Franklin Covey Compact inserts fit very well into a Filofax Personal Malden or Filofax Personal Original cover.

Or A6 wide inserts fit into the Aura Estelle Scarlett covers in A6, with space enough for side tabs.

Sometimes you really have to try out which paper size fits into the cover you have, sometimes you can even use side tabs with the wider size, sometimes only top tabs.

In my Etsy shop for printable planner inserts I will now start to offer inserts for these special sizes:

- A6 wide

- B6 wide

- Personal wide

- A5 wide

- HB x WA5

HB x WA5 is a special Japanese size, it is wide as A5 but high as bible size, which is about Personal size (148 x 170mm = 5.8 x 6.7 inches), nearly square size.

The "normal" sizes will eventually fade out of my shop, there are so many other shops which offer inserts for these sizes that I thought I will concentrate on these special sizes.

But if you like a layout but would like to have it in another size, please contact me via my Etsy shop, I can always adjust the size easily.
